Blinken on China
Blinken on China

According to Bloomberg, Secretary of State Antony Blinken will give a long anticipated speech on US policy toward China, but it will probably not contain any major new policy pronouncements.  He will say that China remains a top priority for the US, since it is the only country that wants to redo the international order and that has the power to do it.  The war in Ukraine shows that Russia would like to be in this category, but is weaker than China.

Blinken will not announce changes to US tariffs on Chinese products.  This policy remains under review. He plans to say that “Under President Xi, the ruling Chinese Communist Party has become more repressive at home and more aggressive abroad.”  Blinken will say that the US policy of strategic ambiguity toward Taiwan will not change, despite Biden’s comments in Japan saying the US would defend Taiwan.
