The Guardian reported that Trump may purge the State Department in his second term just as he did in his first term. It said:
America’s career diplomats are braced for the threat of a mass purge if Donald Trump wins the November election and for the potential flooding of the state department with loyalty-tested political appointees.
If elected, Trump has threatened to reinstate a policy he unsuccessfully attempted in his first term with the creation of “Schedule F”, a new category of federal employees which would be applied to tens of thousands of civil servants in “policy-related” jobs, robbing them of legal protections and making them liable to be fired at will.
During his first term Trump and his appointees decimated the career State Department Foreign Service officer corps. Many of the most senior, most experienced officers resigned or were forced out. Foreign Service officers do tend to be liberal because they are well educated and have had wide experience, but they are loyal Americans and will carry out the tasks given to them, or resign if they feel that they cannot carry them out in good conscience.
There is a possibility that Trump will not need the State Department because he will withdraw from the world. He may be too uneducated and stupid to deal with world affairs. Rather than an America first strategy, he may pursue an America only strategy. However, ignoring the rest of the world is a dangerous strategy, since other countries have armies and nuclear weapons. It could be extremely dangerous.
