Politico reports that the island of Diego Garcia has become a foreign policy issue between the US and the UK. When I was working in the State Department’s current intelligence office many years ago, the Department sent telegrams to every embassy asking them what their country thought about setting up a military base on Diego Garcia. Somebody had posted one of the responses on a bulletin board. It said, “My country thinks Diego Garcia is a cigar.”
