Brazil Defends Adherence to Law in Defiance of Trump’s Attacks on Its Legal System

American President Trump and Brazilian President Lula have been arguing at long distance since Lula hosted the BRICs meeting in Brazil.  According to Bloomberg, Lula told Trump to mind his own business after Trump defended former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro from criminal prosecution in Brazil for attempting a coup.

“This country has laws, rules and a boss called the Brazilian people,” Lula said during a Monday press conference in Rio de Janeiro. “Give your opinion on your life and not ours.”

“I’ll be watching the WITCH HUNT of Jair Bolsonaro, his family, and thousands of his supporters, very closely,” Trump said in a Monday social media post. “The only Trial that should be happening is a Trial by the Voters of Brazil — It’s called an Election. LEAVE BOLSONARO ALONE!”

Lula is hosting his fellow BRICS leaders in Rio de Janeiro for a summit that concludes Monday, and is due to speak publicly in the afternoon.

It is encouraging to see Brazil argue for enforcing its laws, while the Republican Party and the voters in the United States accepted Trump’s snub of the US Constitution by rebelling against the American government on January 6, 2021.

Trump will probably try to pressure Brazil to bow to his commands, but Brazil has the option to try to replace the US with China as its main customer, while increasing its trade with the EU and the other BRICs.
